This project is a collaboration between Kier Williams and the VRU.
At this stage the work is a series of experiments using a motion capture suit and Quartz Composer. These experiments are focused on using movement to control images, graphics, moving image and sound that will later become visual performances. These performances will require physical skill and dexterity to conduct, like playing an instrument. This will create a direct correlation between the skill of the dance or performer and quality of the visual output.
The planned outputs for this work are as follows:
A VJ show done in combination with a live music or a DJ
An installation demonstrating the suit and with additional interactive elements
A performance with musicians whose performance affects the visuals as well as the suit
A publication examining the implications of a dancer / performer using physical skill to create a visual / audio composition
The MIDI suites have been upgraded to work wirelessly and some new operating software has is making them much easier to use.
Instead of using Quartz our recent work has been with the VJ software ArKaos . This software is typically used with MIDI controllers, keyboards switches knobs etc.. The suite acts in the same fashion allowing physical movement switch between, scrub though, speed up and slow down movies.
